ABOUT
Nic Fife makes work that stands at the very edge of self, where spirituality and the physical world collide. For Nic, instinctive mark making is an essential visual language, a conduit for the automatic expression of inner self, an ongoing inventory of moments felt and articulated on the picture plane. Veiled in what she describes as the ‘soft breath’ of white gesso and translucent glazes, her language of mark and colour explores ideas of spirituality and connectedness to all things.
In the stillness and limitless depth of the canvas, Nic makes and remakes the drawn and painted mark, dismantling and dissolving the constructed, socially conditioned self in an ongoing dialogue with her medium that seeks to illuminate an unseen, unknown inner space. The spiritual practice that underpins Nic’s life is fundamental to her studio work. Her art has become a form of focused meditation, where a deep engagement with her agency, her oneness with nature and her very existence are realised in the materiality of paint through an expressive, yet minimalist, aesthetic.
At a time when the white noise of 21st century living has drawn humanity far from its own sense of beauty, these works remind us of the mutuality and magnificence of being.
